Sandy Cummings with Spirits Rising;
Jeff
Elliott, Woody DeMarco, Rex Harte
Sandy will be delighted to entertain
you with the classic jazz standards. It's always a personal experience
for those who hear her sing. And you are guaranteed to see lots of her
long time fans sitting beside you.
Sandy performs regularly with the following musicians: Woody DeMarco,
Jeff Elliott, Dave Bazinet, Jon Crosse, Hank Allen, Stephen Geyer, Drew
Salperto, Rex Harte. The list of other players -- less frequent
performances -- is impressive, too: Reuben Estrada and the Estrada
Brothers, Ian Bernard, Rusty Cummings, John Slais, Peter Clarke, Al
Reese, Chris Colangelo, Kevin Winard, Steve Stockmal, Joe Correro, Randy
Tico, Frank Frost, Dave Tolegian, Tom Buckner, John Hatten, Reuben and
Rene Martinez, Benito Tapia and many more. Her early music career began
in 1972-74 in Goleta with Joe Munda Band (Orchid Bowl) and Johnny
Harris, (Holiday Inn); and the Arthritis Telethon (KTLA) in 1972. Roy
Chamberlain, her first piano player, was hugely influential in her early
music development. He was the arranger for the King Sister's for many
years as well as the conductor for the CBS orchestra in the mid-50s to
mid-60s. Marilyn King and Sandy met and sang together for the first time
in 1998.
Marriage and family led Sandy away from music for 24 years. After the
death of her spouse in 1998, she drew back into her music to cope with
her losses and found a haven of healing in singing music. She's been
doing it ever since -- first at SOhO, then Andria's Harborside for
occasional bookings. Several long running performances at Beto's
Cantina, Bistro Med, and Josie's Four Winds (then became the Pacific
Cove) where she performed on Sunday nights for 140 weeks. She is
celebrating an opening night at the Big Yellow House in Summerland on
Sunday, June 13 at 5:00. She branched into the Ventura area in 2002, and
can be seen there at the Pierpont Inn on a fairly regular basis. Other
credits include performances at the Garden Terrace in Ojai, Tony's Steak
and Seafood in Ventura and The Figaro in Santa Barbara. In addition, she
performed for President Bill Clinton and Lois Capps at a Fund Raiser in
2002, and in 2003, the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation selected her to
provide music for honoree, Harry Belafonte. She has shared the stage in
jam sessions with the following notables -- Carl Saunders, Joe Correro,
Chris Colangelo, Randy Crawford, Marilyn King, James Arnold, Perlene
Thurston, Jevine Karys & Jerome Smith. Sandy appears on Peter Clark's CD
"Been There, Done That", and most recently on Jeff Elliott's, "Different
Jungles". "Both CD appearances do not represent what I do as a singer,
lol. But, I'm in the liner notes, just the same!"
Sandy was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1947 and has been in California since
1953 and Santa Barbara since 1965. She married and raised a family
between 1974 and 1998. She has been with UCSB since 1969 and is
currently graduate advisor in the UCSB Music Department. She has also
been a volunteer therapist at New Beginnings Counseling Center since
1994.
